We are seeking an Operations Manager to oversee our Plumbing and Heating division. This position is ideal for an existing Operations Manager looking for a new challenge or an experienced Project Manager that is looking for the next step in their career.

 

Job Purpose/Summary:

The Operations Manager, Plumbing & Heating is a member of the senior management team and is responsible for achieving corporate goals through operating an efficient and profitable division that offers a full range of plumbing and heating for new and retrofit projects in the industrial, commercial and institutional construction sectors.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

The Operations Manager, Plumbing & Heating’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

· Participate in the strategic planning of the organization; develop and deliver an operational plan that aligns with Dilfo’s values and vision, achieves profitability and efficiency, and promotes sustainable, scalable growth in a financially responsible manner.

· Work with direct reports in the development of annual plans and objectives. Provide leadership and guidance to managers in the performance of their responsibilities; evaluate and recognize employee performance and develop training and professional development plans to improve performance and enhance skills. Take corrective action when necessary to address poor performance.

· Oversee and evaluate the division’s operations for efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of operations and implement changes as appropriate. Review financial statements, sales reports and activity reports to measure the division’s profit, productivity and goal attainment and to identify areas for improvement and cost savings.

· Plan, oversee and control all logistics and resource issues related to shop manufacturing, purchasing and project delivery.

o Participate in pre-bid and pre-award meetings with President and Project Managers.

o Plan and lead pre-construction strategy meetings on the project approach ensuring potential risk factors have been identified, evaluated and mitigated.

o Read and review contract documents; schedule and lead project turnover and close-out meetings with estimators, project manager and foreman.

o Update design/construction project schedule and analysis during pre-construction period.

o Monitor and evaluate reports on project construction execution and take corrective action as necessary.

o Regularly check on the progress and quality of construction and ensure all projects meet applicable safety legislation.

· Manage and optimize all resource (financial, material and people) allocation to support the project teams for multiple projects of various size and complexity. Prepare and maintain accurate schedules, site and shop manpower loading, purchasing, major equipment deliveries, compliant estimates, and budget adherence for all projects.

· Work with managers to correctly identify staffing needs. Manage recruiting, hiring and training, ensuring employees have the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to complete their work safely, effectively and efficiently. Interact with union representatives and build effective working relationships with members.

· Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures and develop new ones as required. Ensure all Plumbing & Heating employees receive all legislated training, health and safety training and updates, and hold necessary certifications.

· Establish and maintain relationships and develop a high level of trust and credibility with key clients, partners, subcontractors, and project teams. Handle enquiries and complaints that require a response at this level.

· Participate in training seminars and other company-sponsored programs that are offered to enhance personal professional development.

 

Description:

The Operations Manager, Plumbing & Heating is a member of the senior management team and is responsible for overseeing and managing the Plumbing and Heating Division to fulfill customer requests. The incumbent contributes to the development of Dilfo’s strategic plan and is responsible for developing the Plumbing & Heating Division’s operations plan aligned with the organization’s goals, values and vision for approval by the President and CEO. The incumbent establishes objectives for his/her direct reports and overall manages approximately 110 employees that work together in the delivery of the full range of services.

 

Experience:

· 5+ years’ experience in a management role with Plumbing and Heating construction, experience OR

· 10+ years of experience as a Project Manager for a Plumbing and Heating construction company

· 10+ years’ experience within a commercial construction and/or design-build company.

· Demonstrated success in managing pre-construction processes for major, complex projects.

· Demonstrated experience managing and leading complex teams of over 20 employees.

· Experience in bidding on large-scale multi-million-dollar projects and complex design-builds.

· Experience in ensuring safe, environmentally responsible, efficient, and effective operations.

 

Education:

· A bachelor's degree in the construction field, such as construction management, construction science, mechanical engineering, certified mechanical engineering technologist/applied science technologist.

· OR Trade Certification with 10+ years of experience in project management/relevant experience.

 

Knowledge and Technical Skills:

· Substantial knowledge and understanding of all applicable practices and techniques, laws, project controls and environmental and safety regulations

· Strong project management skills (project management certification considered an asset quality)

· Exceptional Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project and Spectrum skills

· Ability to read and understand blueprints and construction contract documents

Job Purpose/Summary:

The Project Manager is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control, and completion of specific projects ensuring consistency with company strategy, commitments, and goals. Accomplishes project objectives by planning, organizing, leading, and controlling resources to meet established goals and objectives within cost, schedule, and performance requirements.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

The Project Manager’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Receiving purchase order for the project, reviewing bid, specs, and drawings.
  • Reviewing construction drawings and attending construction meetings to ensure the integrity of the building systems.
  • Scheduling and attending on-site kick-off meeting with the General Contractor, major trades, and coordinate with CAD and other trades.
  • Managing day-to-day client interaction; set and manage client expectations; communicating effectively with client to identify needs and evaluate alternative solutions.
  • Reviewing contracts and identifying revisions, changes, and additions to contractual agreements with architects, consultants, clients, suppliers and sub-contractors.
  • Coordinating the day-to-day activities of the project team as well as directing the flow of work to ensure that project objectives are met.
  • Working with Foremen to ensure that workers are working safely and following the safe work policies and procedures of DILFO Mechanical’s health and safety policy

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in a project management role with a construction company
  • Experience overseeing Plumbing and Heating as a Project Manager
  • Demonstrated success in managing pre-construction processes for major, complex projects.

The Role

We are seeking someone to join our Estimation team, at either an entry level position (training provided) or an intermediate level of estimation experience. As an Estimator, you would be assessing the materials, labour, and equipment required for a variety of mechanical construction projects from very small tenant fit-up projects to conceptual designs, to large mechanical general tender work or design build projects.  Estimators identify and respond to requests for bids, handle significant time-sensitive tasks, and are key contributors to the entire company’s success.

 

Key Tasks:

  • Stay in-the-know on projects that fit the right profile for DILFO to bid on. Request drawing and specifications to determine a potential role for DILFO and prepare for the Chief Estimator to review
  • Analyze contractual terms and conditions, drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications; prepare and submit relevant questions to the General Contractor, and conduct research, planning and cost control activities
  • Provide total cost estimates, considering interrelated construction components such as:
    •  materials, labour, equipment and machinery, work methods, energy, heating, ventilation, climate control, plumbing, electricity…
  • Manage tender documents, and upload key information to our project database
  • Request bids from sub-trades and suppliers and manage quotes for competitive bidding
  • Write high quality proposal submissions in a fast and timely manner to meet deadlines
  • Communicate effectively with general contractors, engineers, architects, and project managers to get a solid understanding of the job, timing, and identify any red flags that may pose a significant challenge. Travel to project job sites when needed to inspect work site conditions and prepare an accurate estimate
  • Build key relationships with suppliers, contractors, and sub-contractors to create a good working relationship and establish favorable pricing

 

 

Knowledge and Technical Skills:

  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications
  • Solid understanding of labour and material price trends, regulations, and exchange rates
  • Knowledge of how and where to gather new project bid information, through industry updates, creating client referrals, or by checking websites such as the Ottawa Construction Association, Merx, Biddingo, etc
  • An understanding of the proposal submission process, including procedures, information gathering, and the ability to analyze Requests for Proposals to prepare winning bids
  • Basic understanding of contract law, and understand varied contractual terms and conditions
  • MS-Office Suite, particularly Excel and Outlook; estimating software such as Quote Express; and Bluebeam software—PDF reader, and Spectrum
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, SMACNA & ASHRAE standards as well as LEED requirements for construction projects

Relevant Qualifications:

  • 0-1 years experience for entry level
  • 1-5 years experience for intermediate
  • A college diploma (DEC) or CÉGEP qualification in construction estimation or building mechanics technology
  • Certified engineering technologist (CET), Applied Science Technologists (A. Sc.t) or a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
  • "Certified Quantity Surveyor" and "Certified Construction Estimator", granted by the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, is considered a strong asset
  • Bilingualism in both French and English is considered an asset

Job Purpose/Summary:

The Project Coordinator works directly with the project managers to ensure the project objectives, policies, and procedures are completed in accordance with company policy and contract specifications.

 

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

The Project Coordinator’s duties include, but are not limited to the following:

 

• Reviewing and submitting documents to the General Contractor and ensuring all Dilfo sub-trades have the necessary information, maintaining communication with general contractor, sub-trades and suppliers.

• Reviewing shop-drawing submissions from suppliers and sub-trades, confirming requirements for equipment, and submitting to General Contractor.

• Assisting HVAC Services and Project Managers with scheduling start-up and training, maintaining job costing, and administration and filing of documents.

• Completing change orders, following up with suppliers for pricing, obtaining submittals from sub-trades.

• Maintaining project files (physical and electronic), including shop drawings submittals, RFI’s, site instructions and associated schedule logs.

• Managing, updating, and maintaining client software (PCL PDC, ProCore, etc.)

• Preparing close out documentation, including operating and maintenance manuals, as-builts, test reports and commissioning documents.

• Complying with all company health and safety policies and procedures.

 

Experience:

• 1-3 years of experience in construction industry.

 

Education:

• A bachelor's degree in the construction field, such as construction management, construction science, mechanical engineering etc. OR a certified mechanical engineering technologist/applied science technologist

 

Technical Skills:

• Ability to read and understand construction documents such as drawings, equipment,

• Understanding construction process and the timing of activities

• Exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Outlook

• Basic knowledge of various mechanical systems
